You can’t talk about auto immunity without talking about leaky gut. A leaky gut is scurvy of the intestinal tract. It is a collagen disease where the fabric of the gut is unravelling, affecting the junctions between the villi. It affects the dermal lining and vascular integrity, creating lesions and increased bowel lesions and increased permeability. Collagen is the glue that holds body together like mortar between bricks of a brick wall. It is the primary connective tissue in the body and gives the body structural integrity.

A leaky gut allows substances to leak through. Toxins, undigested proteins, and pathogens permeate the body, leading to more immune system challenges and inflammation. This is a significant part of the auto-immune disease and must be handled.

Here are some symptoms that may indicate an intestinal hyperpermeability (leaky gut):

  • food intolerances
  • abdominal pain, distention
  • diarrhea
  • fatigue, malaise
  • pain in multiple joints, muscles
  • fevers of unknown origin
  • skin rashes
  • cognitive and memory deficits
  • chronic depression
