Most people that come to NHHC for help are taking supplements from their local grocery or drug stores. They may be using a protein powder to make smoothies. We have been told that they will help us in one way or another. Did you know that they can also cause problems?

It’s true that human beings need vitamins, minerals, protein, enzymes, and other nutrients to repair and maintain the body. The problem is that 99% of supplements you find on the shelves are synthetic. This means that they are made in a lab. They are not food. All vitamins are not created equal!

For example, a Vitamin C supplement can be synthetic or real. The most popular form of synthetic C is ascorbic acid, which comes from corn starch, corn sugar, or rice starch, and is chemically dependent upon volatile acids. Some manufacturers put “natural” on the bottle. This only means that 10% of the ingredients need to be real. The rest is synthetic. A real Vitamin C supplement has hundreds of parts to it including ascorbic acid, and comes only from food and plants. This is what makes it effective.

In my office, I have seen in some cases, the fatigue, toxicity, mental sluggishness, etc., have come from the synthetic supplements that patients have been on for years.

Why do they make and sell synthetic supplements? I’ll give you one guess….money.

It’s cheaper and easier to make synthetic supplements. Whole food supplements require food from a reputable organic farm. Processing is careful so as to not destroy the live, delicate enzymes that are a vital part of the supplement. These are not found in synthetic supplements…at all…ever.

Eventually, synthetic supplements take a toll on the body. If you are taking a protein powder or supplement that hasn’t been tested on you, bring them to your next appointment. We will see if they are helping you or hurting you.

So, that is the difference between the imposters and the real thing.

Who cares? Your body does!

And so should you.
